BARENA: THE VENICE LAGOON, WHERE IT ALL BEGINS
The Barena is that place of transition, which embraces the city of Venice, not yet sea nor dry land. An enchanted and wild oasis, indomitable and unchanged over the centuries. Mystical, deserted place, now submerged, now silent, of water and bushes in which naturally the essential of oneself is found. Our culture comes from this poetic lagoon world and in particular from the world of work connected to it, from Venice, an island city, for centuries a world reference in fashion and style and an incredible forge of artists, nobles, merchants.
FROM TRADITION TO CONTEMPORARY
Barena Venezia was founded in 1993 by Sandro Zara, who was joined by Massimo Pigozzo to design the very first Barena’s Collection. The brand grew significantly season after season, extending to womenswear in 2008 when Francesca Zara, daughter of Sandro, entered in the family business as Barena Women’s creative director. While keeping a fabric-first ethos from the very begining, MassimoPigozzo and Francesca Zara build each collection from the ground up, starting by looking for unique materials and then basing their designs off the fabrics they find, often using original early 20th century patterns from the now rich brand Archive.
A FAMILY STORY SINCE 1993
Today, Barena Venezia is a family-owned company, renowned for its craftmanship and passion for Italian tailoring, managed by three siblings who bring diverse experiences to the brand’s most strategic areas.
Francesca Zara, in the role of CCO, Chief Creative Officer, is Head Designer and Creative Director for Barena’s Womenswear. Francesca is also responsible for the overall Barena brand image.
Giovanni Zara, in the role of COO, Chief Operation Officer, is primarly responsible for all the company’s operations, including the e-commerce area.
Davide Sambin Zara, who has recently joined the company alongside his siblings, in the role of CCO, Chief Commercial Officer with responsibilities of business development, sales, and marketing.

Barena Venezia appropriates what has been and re-elaborates from tradition to contemporary. Reinvents by working on exclusive fabrics created by local producers. Experiment with shapes thanks to an indispensable in-house laboratory-study where a team of precious and synergistic people creates and constructs each garment, piece by piece. It is the desire to entrust ourselves to these skilled hands that has always guided the production of the Barena collections, from the prototype to the final garment. Indeed, more than Made in Italy, ours is Made in Venice.
